Throughout history, trade, culture and human development have emerged, flourished and
converged in the Middle East. Facilitated by an expansive maritime tradition that linked the
Arabian Gulf to Asia, Africa and Europe a rich heritage and complex cultural landscape has
evolved around this cultural junction. Despite this, little is known about the construction and
use of the earliest ships that enabled the long-distance oceanic travel that was the catalyst for
globalization and a connected world.
